A video camera is a camera used for electronic cinema / image acquisition, which was developed by the television industry but now common in many applications, too. Video cameras were too early for John Logie Baird, based on the electromechanical Nipkow disk and used by the BBC in experimental broadcasts through the 1930s. All electronic designs are based on the tube cathode ray, as Iconoscope Vladimir Zworykin and Philo T. Farnsworth 's Image dissector, supplanted the Baird system by the 1940s and still in wide use until the 1980s.

A video camera typically attached to the computer via USB or integrated in a notebook or display desktop. It is used primarily for videophoning through networks such as Skype, as well as continuous monitoring of activity and deliver video to a Web server to public or private viewing. Webcams have established that the streaming video to a website, capture virtually anything, including a bedroom, schools, offices, a street corner, an interesting outdoor and of course, pornography, developers of the latter inspired by the decade 1990 to greatly improve webcam software.

The two main modes of the video camera. The first video camera mode is characteristic of much early television, is what we call a live broadcast, where the camera is fed directly in real-time images to a screen faster observation, in addition to live television production, such use is a safety feature, tactics and military or industrial operations where surreptitious or remote viewing is required. The second video camera mode, is that the images / image recorded on a storage device for archiving or further processing, for many years, video tape has been the main format used for this purpose, but optical disc media, hard disk and flash memory are increasingly available. Recorded video is used not only in television and film production, but also surveillance and monitoring tasks if the recording unattended in a situation it is necessary for later purposes and use.
